Yes, we ate by the ocean. Yes, we slept in a teak carved, mosquito netted bed. Yes, we went on a spice tour. Yes, we beached a bit. Yes, we wandered the old part of the city.
What we learned…air conditioning in the tropics is a must no matter what size the bed is. Many people here (and in Dar) are too poor to know where their next meal is coming from, but that doesn’t stop them from having a cell phone. Most farms on Zanzibar are still small (under 3 acres) and have numerous crops. Spices were not indigenous. A clove can be used as a painkiller for a toothache (hold it on the tooth then chew). Ginger can counteract nausea. White (or in our case, red) skin is a beggar and peddler magnet. There is as much trash and accompanying stench as there is raw beauty to this land.
