ohmygosh...first day of travel was hard. Left at 1 a.m. (Wed) Anchorage time; 4 hours to Salt Lake City; 4 hours to Atlanta; 10 hours to Ahens; 11 hours of time zone changes and arrived in Athens 10:30 a.m. (Thurs). We got on a bus and then a ferry headed to Aedipsos on the Island of Evvia. On a grand total of 4 hours sleep we arrived, got pastries from a street vendor, found a hotel with hot springs/spa/pool, donned swimsuits, relaxed in pool and crashed. 13 hours later we were rejuvenated and ready to go. This morning (Frid) we ate breakfast on a covered porch across from beach, rode a taxi (Mercedes) about 45 minutes to a small port (Gylfa) to boat across to Skiathos. We originally planned Skopelos today but couldn't get a boat across until Sat. We are chill and going with the flow! We arrived and one of the first signs we saw was the announcement of the outdoor showing of Mamma Mia! which was filmed on the island. How cool is that? So, if you want to know how I'm spending my first full day in the Greek Islands, go see the movie!
Everyone so far is very patient with our English. We are trying on common phrases (thank you, good morning, etc) and they appreciate the effort. The countryside reminds me a bit of Italy, Tuscany countryside. Lots of browns and greens. The water looks dense and deep azure blue. Around the edges it appears more green and crystal clear.
Mary and I trekked up old cobblestone breezeways that double as alleys and streets for the not-so-faint-hearted drivers. We found a cool old windmill and small church. Red tiled roofs and whitewashed buildings hug the hills that seem to swell out of the blue.
Not sunburned, yet (although plenty of opportunity). We get back on the boat in a hour and go to remote beaches. We have SPF 30 and 55 so don't worry. These screaming white legs from AK are gong to have a wee bit of color before heading home!
Need to grab a bite before catching the next boat. Big Love.
