Day 1: Long day of traveling. No major delays. Greg FRUSTRATED about car rental scam (Tom Miller, he feels your pain).
Day 2: Drive, drive, drive to get to Grand Canyon by sunset. Beautiful.
Day 3: Clouds roll in, chilly wind, snow on the ground. These two Alaskans hiked the South Rim anyway. Also took the shuttle to the western edge. Nice. Left mid day. Shopped a little for wedding duds in Flagstaff. Nothing to write home about. Left in a blizzard. We can't get away from the snow!
Day 4: Easy drive to San Diego. Better luck shopping. Lunch at Anthony's. Married at courthouse. Had a drink at the Hotel del Coronado. Drove to Oceanside--stayed in 2 bedroom flat in boutique hotel overlooking the ocean.
Day 5: Drove from Oceanside to LA. Boarded Norwegian Cruise Line, Star. 2,000 passengers and 1,000 crew. Mary hit a predictable-go-until-she-drops-wall and slept for 18 hours. Greg scoped the ship.
Day 6: Leisure day at sea. Buffets, casinos, less-than-impressive evening entertainment.
Day 7: Cabo San Lucas. Greg’s fishing trip got cancelled. He was a wee bit disappointed not to catch his first marlin…but was a sport and went parasailing and whale watching with Mary. Perfect weather. Parasailing at peak was about 200 feet above the bay—stunning views. Saw about half a dozen pods of hump back whales.
Day 8: Mazatlan. Only paying passengers on an 82.5-foot schooner, relaxed and easy day on the water. Delivered us to a remote restaurant location where we had the best ever coconut shrimp, margarita and pina colada.
Day 9: Puerto Vallarta. Extreme zip-lining, rappelling, rope bridge walking, free falling. Greg was ready to do it again. Mary (proudly) lived to tell about it.
Days 10 & 11: Leisure days a sea. See day 6. Enjoyed the magician.
Day 12: Los Angeles. Took niece Leslie and honey, Paul, to breakfast. Walked the blocks of stars. Went to Santa Monica beach and wandered the pier. Met nephew, Jacob, for dinner. Flew to Portland.
