I LOVE introducing Alaska to cheechakos

Remember the first time you saw Denali from Talkeetna…wandered the spirit houses at Eklutna…hiked to Thunderbird falls…witnessed a moose cow protect her twins…picked up rocks on the beach at Homer…heard a glacier pop and crack…ate pie in Eureka…experienced the vistas of Hatcher’s Pass…caught your first halibut…watched eagles cavort as if this were their playground…threw back your first at the Salty Dog…felt the temperature drop as you approached Exit…viewed Ninilchik from the Russian Orthodox perch…had tea at the Roadhouse…wondered at a midnight sunset…took in the Anchorage bowl from Flat Top…gazed across Katchemak Bay from Land’s End or Cook Inlet from Captain Cook State Park or Resurrection Bay from Lowell Point?

Some of my besties from the lower 48 just visited and we did all of that (and more!) It was great fun. I even got to see a humpback whale breach with a couple of them.

And then they were gone and
we were back to “business”…
dipping…which, has been disappointing for the first time ever. I know I can’t complain because we have been so very fortunate. I’m of the opinion that these “schools” of fish have begun reading the tide tables and are sneaking in under the wire! Greg and I have put our nets in the water four (or was it five?) times and have only thirteen sockeyes to show for it. Bah.

Have a freezer full of halibut, though. Trip out of Deep Creek last week was just lovely. Sun reflecting off the calm water. Spotted fifteen sea otters (including two babies riding with moms), two seals and four puffins. And we actually limited.

My last big project this summer is staining the deck. We’ve decided not to put up railings. For now. We like the openness and unobstructed view. Guess that, in a nutshell, is how I'm looking at and living life.
