Summer Fun

Have about half the halibut we want for our “quota”. Could halibut fish every day if conditions were right. Love the water, the peacefulness, the scenery, the time with my honey, the “hit” and reeling in. Having food for the freezer to share is a bonus.

Hosted Greg’s brother and family (David, Dorothy, Cheryl) for about 10 days. A friend of Greg’s from high school (Ken) plus wife, Carol, and brother, Brian, were down for a couple of nights. Greg has been on the Kenai River twice a day for the last three chasing the “red run”. Juli & Larry were down from Palmer and got close to their limit. Anticipating more time on the river for the rest of the week to get our salmon quota!

Took Stan (the camper) to pick up Hannah & Nick on Friday. Realized this is Hannah’s sixth visit to Alaska (!) and Nick’s first. Walked on Matanuska Glacier. Camped at King Mountain. Independence Mine. Attempted a hike to Reed Lake…9 mile round trip. I overheated after an hour and turned back to care for doggies and cook dinner. Other three made the entire trek and slept well after we drove through Hatcher’s Pass and camped on the Willow side. Drove north to Talkeetna to have breakfast at the Roadhouse Inn. Hiked over to train trestle and experienced Alaska rail travel up close and personal. Drove to south face of Denali but she was socked in. Camped at Eklutna Lake before heading down the Kenai. Three nights in camper with four adults and three doggies was a wee bit close quarters but everyone was on their best behavior and we had much fun.

Sent Hannah & Nick to Seward for a Major Marine tour into Resurrection Bay. Some of you know that seeing a whale breach was on my bucket list. After numerous whaling adventures in various corners of the globe, I finally saw one last year (on a Major Marine tour into Resurrection Bay) and was delighted. Within the first thirty minutes of their voyage, they watched three humpbacks breach at least ten times. And they have pictures to prove it. Awesome.

Today we strolled along Captain Cook beach, searched out an eagle aerie and drove through “old” Kenai. Here are a few pictures.

Beauty and love. My life is full of both. And therefore full. I am incredibly grateful.
