We keep promising dad that we are going to pull back from the 10-12 hour days. By the time we found Silver Lake Provincial Park in British Columbia, an end-of-the-road gem-of-a-campsite, it had been another. At least we had our first campfire of the trip!
In Canada we “old school” it—remember life before GPS? Yep, back to books & maps.
Day two above the border had two goals: make it to Prince George and do it in less than ten hours. Drove through Canadian Rockies, high desert (think Wild West barren, craggy), ranch/farm land, lumber mill in just about every town. Eight and a half hours; yay! Hot showers in a RV Park because the next few days we are headed into the wilderness.
From Prince George we have a choice—the more traveled Alaskan Highway or the more remote Cassiar Highway. We’ve done both and prefer the Cassiar. This time of year we are hoping for (multiple?) animal sightings.
Yellowhead Highway
Prince George to Junction of 37
1 black bear
2 cubs
2 mule deer
1 wolf
Cassiar Highway to Meziadin Junction
1 wolf
7 black bear
3 grizzlies
Meziadin Lake Provincial Park...campsite less than 15 yards from the mirror lake, Jambalaya, s’mores, campfire by myself after the men turned in.
First Mother’s Day motherless has had moments of sadness and reflection. We go on. She gave me life—and that is a gift I’ve chosen never to squander. Love from the northland.
