Greg & I figured out today that we’ve each driven the cross-country Alaska to North Carolina or vice versa five times. That’s just since 2006. The route we’ve chosen this time is not the most scenic...but my, oh, my...how I’m reminded every time we criss-cross what a diverse, BIG land America is! Rolling hills and spring about sprung through Tennessee and Kentucky. Farmland, prairies, wide open spaces with just the hint of spring through Illinois and Nebraska. Buttes and rock formations across southern Wyoming.
We are trying to get to Tillamook, OR by late on the 8th so “booking it” would be a fair description of our pace. Trying to “do” or “see” something new/different every day to break the monotony of miles and miles on the road. Today that was Chimney Rock National Monument.
It is one of the lesser known/visited National Monuments. Was cool to spy from a distance and realize that folks have been using it as a landmark for a long time—recorded as far back by pioneers on the Oregon and California Trails in the mid 19th century. The Lakota first natives had a better sense of humor when referencing—their word for it translated “elk penis”.
