25 Nights; 5,328 Miles

No good yeasty donuts. On the whole trip. Two solid seasons—from a driving blizzard to sandals on the beach. Spats within couples but not across families. Some mean spades games. Goal of daily ‘grounding’. One driving close call. Thankful-for-flip-flops shower houses. Rhythms of “everything in its place” mornings and “unpack it all” evenings. More interstates than I’d like; as many back roads as I could talk them into. So many unique bridges.

In New Jersey we found the little Baptist church where Debye was baptized and did a drive-by of her childhood home. What a fun conversation starter about ALL our childhoods. On to Atlantic City to walk the boardwalk and pier and sit down to a seafood dinner. Happy to report that while we walked through a casino, no money was lost to either the hawkers nor the bling-bling machines.

Easter Sunday found us on the road to Assateague Island in search of wild ponies. Streamed worship service from Decatur FUMC along the way. Fond memories for me, home church now for Debye & Jody. On the island we were told to look for patches of green as the horses were hungry & looking for the same. Saw 5, then 1, then 5 more, 4, 5, 4, 5–29 total! How lucky we are.

In Virginia Beach the guys spent some time in the Military Aviation Museum where one of the largest private collections of historical aircraft is housed. The planes have all been meticulously restored and regularly fly in air shows. They enjoyed.

Headed on down the coast to our final destination on this epic journey—the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Did a little beach combing. Watched wind & kite surfers & considered potential outcomes if we were to try it. Rode the ferry to Ocracoke. Wandered the boardwalk of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) housed in the old Coast Guard Station. Ate more seafood. Shopped a little. More beachcombing. Ferry ride back and it’s time to point Evangeline toward Murphy!

We know how very fortunate we are to be able to wander/wonder our way through these retirement years. Enough time. Enough money. More than enough friends & family to share. Thanks for following along on another journey.
