Oh, Canada

Debye & Jody are baseball aficionados so we weren’t getting close to Cooperstown and not go to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Fun place to spend the morning. Headed to Schenectady to Union

College for a drive by of the Nott Memorial building—one the few 16 sided buildings in the world. Pennsylvania roads left something to be desired. New York roads were meh. Vermont roads were a welcome relief—but someone forgot to remind these folks that it is spring! Snow, blizzard, cold was our experience in this beautiful state.

That didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves. First stop, The Vermont Country Store, a quintessential favorite. I heard Debye tell Greg that this store (for her) was equivalent to a museum stop (for him). Then on to Waterbury for a Ben & Jerry’s fix. Funny thing. Once a year they have a “pick a free cone” day. How did we happen to hit that day? Was it mobbed? Pretty much. Did we have fun in the COLD and even tour the dead flavor graveyard? You betcha.

It was supposed to drop to 18 for the night & we’ve been on the road over a week so we opted for a New England Inn for the night. I may’ve taken several baths while there. Generally don’t like to backtrack but we missed the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium in St Johnsbury, VT so headed back the next morning. Totally worth it. Advertised as “a New England curiosity cabinet, one hundred years on”. A delightful place to get lost in for a couple of hours.

One more stop, The Frost Place, before heading to Augusta, ME to visit niece, Rachel & family. Robert Frost’s home outside of Franconia, NH was not open but the poetry hiking trail behind it was. A pleasant pause along the way. Rachel, Theo, Bo and the boys (Austin & Lucas) welcomed us with open arms. Did some laundry. Rory got to run in an unencumbered space. Went out for pizza. I got another bath. Charged up the batteries. Hearty biscuits & gravy. Lots of little munchkin time. Quick, great visit.

Solid day of driving put us squarely in New Brunswick, Canada. Only detour along the way was a quick jog off the interstate in Bangor, Maine for a drive-by of Stephen King’s home—

loved the spider web fence. Tonight we’ll sleep in Young’s Cove at a truck stop gravel camping spot. Was warned that most campgrounds wouldn’t be open yet. Pam, you were right. But we are going with the flow and making do. Tomorrow, Prince Edward Island!
