Week 1

Rain and cold greeted us in Kenai. We did not lose any land off the bluff this year but the weather made us reconsider, one last time, whether or not to build. Day two the sun came out. It’s a go.

We unloaded the tiny house of all the storage boxes and put them in a trailer. Just how many times are we going to move these boxes? Nested and made ourselves at home. We built a privacy fence in front of the outdoor shower and toilet. I’m wondering exactly why didn’t we do that last year?

We won’t have running water until next week when the well folks come to drop a pump and run some lines. Until then we’re back to making do with 5 gallon jugs.

Couldn’t begin drilling 4 feet down for the foundation work because the ground was still frozen. That was frustrating to Greg. So was having to replace a starter on his truck. And having to take Ruth (my little Ranger) to have bearings replaced.

Took the time to clear brush and cut up downed trees. Friday we had two dump truck loads of gravel dropped to spread under the house. Greg rented a skidder with a bucket and auger and began foundation prep.

Sea otters feed out front every evening. Dolphins joined them one night. Another night a pod of Belugas and then seals made their way into the inlet. The mountains have been absolutely gorgeous.

We have become a society who pays others to do our “work” while we pursue “careers/professions”. As I was counting my blessings last night I realized that there is much to be said for the tired muscles which accompany good, hard labor. And I am thankful for a couple of bodies that are still cooperating with the crazy notion/desire/dream of building a home with our own two hands.
