Week 4

There are no pictures of me because I haven’t done a whole lot of hands on work on the house (especially compared to the guys). A little insulating. Flashing in the window holes. Running errands. Cooking. Cleaning up around the work site.

All in all, the building process is turning out to be an exercise in humility. And I am ok with that. Am not usually low man on the totem pole or not the lead dog. Here are a few observations. Grunt work is good exercise. House building is not really hard…if you know what you are doing. But there is a LOT of knowledge: foundations, floors, walls, ceiling, roofing, plumbing, electrical. And the dirty little secret is that since this is the only house I ever plan on building, I’m ok with others knowing that stuff and directing me to help.

I figure the finish work (painting, tiling, flooring, etc.) will be my forte anyway. Considering that Greg and I took a couple of days off this week so he could go fishing out of Whittier and I could play in Anchorage with colleagues who have become good friends, the progress is still good.

Studded walls up. Windows and doors framed. Had to tarp the entire roof due to one evening of rain. Our trusses are on order and we’re hoping for delivery sooner rather than later so we can close it up to the weather.

This week’s pictures start here
