We took a week off to do Grand Camp with Madison (almost 16) and Rylan (12).Camped four nights. Kennecott Mine. Hiked 6 miles. (Kiddos) walked on Root Glacier. Ferried from Valdez to Whittier. Took them dipnetting. Rylan dipped his first sockeye. Madison dipped the two biggest. Swimming at the Nikiski pool. Movie night. Lots of food prep/meals. Games. Scavenger hunt with the winner getting to drive solo at the Ninilchik airport. Yay, Madison! 1100+ miles and a good time had by all.
And then we were back at it. Some big wins this week. Homer Electric came and juiced the new meter box. Mik came and pulled all the wires for the breaker box. Those two things have been holding up so many others. Greg started the plumbing on the new well pressure tank. It’s still inside until we get the storage room floor dug out, gravel in, concrete down. We agreed that we will probably not “finish” the walls of the storage room or shop this summer…but I informed Greg that if he wanted me to tape, mud, sand any more drywall he better get it up this summer because I NEVER intend to do this again!
Bedroom, closet, bathroom, hall and two walls of the living room all have at least three coats of mud and have been sanded. Bedroom, closet, bathroom and two walls of the living room also have two coats of primer and are ready to paint! “Hall” walls (bedroom wall across from kitchen and bathroom wall across from bedroom) have first coat of primer. Built some shelves for the closet that are done except for the facing—I’m going to need to rip that on a table saw and we haven’t brought that to the project yet.
We sold the fifth wheel (for a profit!) so Greg swallowed the bitter pill and told the folks to put us on the calendar to build our $20,000 mound septic. He talked to the head of DEC who said he would not be opposed to our putting in a low-use (2 people, 1 bedroom, only summers) traditional septic if we could get our engineer to sign off on it. Our engineer “just wouldn’t feel comfortable” with that recommendation. That ate at Greg for a week, but he finally came around, but not before asking me if I was sure I couldn’t just have a composting toilet? Hard no, resell value was my response.
We’re having more sun than rain and I’ve gotta say, that helps with our moods. Thankyouverymuch. The reds are in the river and we need to go fishing to get some fish for winter. That’s the Sunset update; thanks for following along.
