Massive Tiny House

Dipnetting sockeye salmon is open for AK residents from July 1 – 31. Alaska Department of Fish and Game has a hotline and website to keep folks informed of the number of fish in the river on any given day. We usually try to hit it when there are at least 40 to 50,000 reds running. Most years there are a couple of 100,000+ days. This year was extraordinary: July 25, 120,363; July 26, 195,029; July 27, 146,970; July 28, 132, 852; July 29, 137, 844. We missed those as we were in the thick of projects and couldn’t get away until the 31. It was a warm, pleasant day with few boats on the river. Greg joked that everyone else had already limited out! We caught 21 in two hours and called it good. That’s not as many as we usually get but there is little “usual” about our summer. By the 31st, over 700,000 sockeyes had swum up the Kenai River; that’s a lot of fish.

We’ve had some good days and some bad days. Greg spoke with a friend on the phone this week and I overheard him say that we went over budget May 15. I had to chuckle. Maybe not that soon but we are now at the point that we really don’t much care. It is all about getting it done. We are going on three months in this 9.5’ camper and we are both still alive so we are going to call that a win.

Greg gave up on finding someone to dig out the carports. He rented a skid steer and dug out 60 yards of dirt himself. Ordered 60 yards of gravel. Rented another skid steer and filled them back up. The leveling and prepping for concrete was back breaking work that he finished yesterday. Concrete begins arriving on Tuesday. This will be such a milestone moment.

I’ve completed taping, mudding, sanding, priming and painting the walls. I may’ve celebrated too soon. Went in this morning to pull the painter’s tape on the 4 walls that bump against a different color aaaaaaaand the tape pulled the paint so I have some “fixing” to do before I post pictures. Unfortunately, we find ourselves doing things twice or three times because we are not professional construction workers. Such is a “cost” of doing it yourself.

We do all we can six days a week. The massive tiny house (as Greg has begun talking about the space) is coming along.
