Talked to my sister, Susan, who reminded me that this was Labor Day weekend. Every day is a holiday when you’re retired! Decided to spend some extra time in Misssoula with Johnny instead of fighting crowds in parks. Took a day trip to the first Montana capital, Bannack, which is now a ghost town. Nice and deserted.
Sunday was our 6 month anniversary; we headed to Yellowstone to celebrate. Arrived midday, entered from the north, took in the northern loop (sights, sounds, smells) before losing daylight and having the roads closed because of snow. On the way out we were stopped twice for 15 -20 minutes for bison herds crossing the road. Where else?
Montana has a weathered, good-looking face. Undulating grassy vistas. Vertically-stacked rocks. Tree-spotted rises. Rugged mountains. Monday we drove the Beartooth Scenic Highway to Billings and then on to Little Big Horn. Custer didn’t stand a chance. Looping back toward Yellowstone via Cody to do the southern loop before heading into Grand Tetons.
